We take your privacy seriously. If you give us your email, we won’t sell or give it away. We track visitation via an online analytics tool. Unless you log into our Services, the data is anonymized, so we have no idea that it’s you.
We originally said that we could write more here and pretend we’re lawyers, but who ever reads this anyway. However, our lawyers convinced us to include some lawyerly language below. In the end, we don’t won’t share your data, in whatever form we have, with anyone outside of Protern.io.
Protern.io Inc. (“Protern.io”) owns and operates the website located at https://protern.io (“Website”), the Protern.io application made available through the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, including the supporting cloud-based platform (the “App”).
1.0 – Ways Protern.io Collects Personal Information
“Personal Information” is information that, either alone or in combination with other information collected, identifies an individual. When we combine other information (i.e., information that does not, on its own, identify an individual) with Personal Information, we treat the combined information as Personal Information.
1.1 – When you Create a Protern.io Account
When you create an account on a Protern.io website or mobile app, we ask you to provide Personal Information, including your name and email address. You will use your email address and your password to login to your account. Your Protern.io account will be password-protected. We use your name to help verify your account when you call customer support.
1.2 – When you access the Website or use the App
When you access the Website or use the App, we may collect information from you that you either enter into the Website or App or which is collected automatically. We explain this in more detail below.
1.3 – When you Communicate with Protern.io
When you interact with us via email, telephone or in person, we may collect Personal Information, such as your name, mailing address, phone number, email address and contact preferences; and information about the Protern.io products you own, such as their serial numbers and date of purchase. We also may create event logs that are useful in diagnosing product or app performance related issues, and capture information relating to the support or service issue. We use this information to provide you with customer and product support. We may access your Protern.io account in order to assist us in providing you the necessary assistance. To improve customer service, subject to applicable laws, we may also record and review conversations with customer support representatives, and analyze any feedback provided to us through voluntary customer surveys.
We may use Personal Information to communicate with you, including communicating with you about your account or transactions with us, giving you important information about your products or apps, sending you notice about material changes to this Privacy Statement, and, consistent with applicable laws and the choices available to you as described below under Your Choices regarding Marketing Correspondence, sending you offers and promotions for our products and apps.
1.4 – When you Use Your Protern.io App
If you use a Protern.io app (particularly in combination with any performance measuring equipment), then Protern.io will collect and upload from your device data such as location, speed, direction, and time and date of recording. This data will be de-identified by Protern.io and used to enhance the quality of our products and apps and other features enabled by Protern.io.
1.5 – Other Uses of Personal Information by Protern.io
Protern.io may use Personal Information for internal statistical, marketing or operational purposes, including generating sales reports and measuring and understanding demographic, user interest, purchasing and other trends among our customers.
2.0 – Ways Protern.io uses your personal information
2.1 – To provide the services
We use your personal information to provide certain services to you. If you are using a measurement device and have synced the App with that device then we will record and analyse the information from that device so that you can view and use that information.
2.2 – To improve the services
We will use information that we record and analyze to improve both our services and our devices. We will use this information on an aggregated and/or anonymized basis.
2.3 – To communicate with you
We may use your personal information for the purposes of communicating with you, to understand how you are using our App and devices and to try improving them.
2.4 – To send you marketing communications
We may from time to time send you marketing communications about our products and services. However, we will never sell your personal information to anyone else.
3.0 – Entities with Which Protern.io May Share Personal Information
3.1 – With Service Providers
We use third party service providers to help us to administer certain activities on our behalf, such as fulfilling purchases and shipping products, processing credit card payments, sending emails, providing advertisements, analyzing usage of our websites and apps, tracking effectiveness of our marketing campaigns, and allowing users to connect to their social network. We may share Personal Information about you with such third party service providers to the extent necessary for the sole purpose of enabling them to perform services on our behalf.
Here are examples of third-party service providers we use:
- Email Providers: Cloud services from MailChimp are used to assist Protern.io in sending emails, consistent with applicable laws and the choices available to you as described below under Your Choices regarding Marketing Correspondence.
- Hosting Providers: Cloud services from Amazon are used to assist Protern.io in hosting our servers.
- Analytics Services: Protern.io uses third-party service providers to help us better understand usage of Protern.io’s products and mobile apps, and for related purposes. The third parties we currently use to provide such analytics and related services are described below under Cookies and Similar Technology.
3.2 – Other Disclosures
We may disclose Personal Information about you to others if we have your consent to do so in such form of consent as may be required under applicable law.
Subject to applicable laws in your jurisdiction, we may also disclose Personal Information about you to others as we believe to be necessary or appropriate: (a) under applicable law or regulation, including laws or regulations outside your country of residence; (b) to comply with legal process; (c) to respond to requests from public authorities and law enforcement officials, including officials outside your country of residence; (d) to assist or support theft investigations involving Protern.io products or property, (e) to enforce any of our terms and conditions or policies; (f) to protect our operations or those of any of our affiliates and subsidiaries; (g) to protect the rights, privacy, safety or property of Protern.io, its affiliates and subsidiaries, you or others; or (h) to permit us to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain.
We may also transfer Personal Information to an affiliate, a subsidiary or a third party in the event of any reorganization, merger, sale, joint venture, assignment, transfer or other disposition of all or any portion of Protern.io’s business, assets or stock, including, without limitation, in connection with any bankruptcy or similar proceeding.
4.0 – Ways You May Share Personal Information or Direct Protern.io to Share Your Personal Information
Teams and coaches
Where you are part of a team (“Team”), the Services can function to share some or all of Your Data with your Team members, coaches, trainers and mangers (“Team Members”) in a virtual information place (“Your Shared Data”). As a User, you decide whether to share your information with a Team or not. You retain the rights to Your Shared Data, but where you share Your Data with a Team, then you grant Proten.io a perpetual, irrevocable license to make that part of Your Shared Data available to your Team. You may stop sharing Your Data with a Team at any point or change the Team with whom you share Your Data, but this will not affect any of Your Shared Data that have already shared with that Team. These provisions do not affect any other agreement that you may have with Your Team regarding use of Your Shared Data. If you are accessing the data of another Team member then such access and use is facilitated by our Service but it is your responsibility to enter a separate agreement with such User regarding such use – these terms of use do not form an agreement between Users.
5.0 – Cookies and Similar Technology
To help analyze how you and other visitors navigate Protern.io websites, and compile aggregate statistics about site usage and response rates, we, with assistance from third-party analytics service providers, collect certain information when you visit our site. This information includes IP address, geographic location of the device, browser type, browser language, date and time of your request, time(s) of your visit(s), demographics, page views and page elements (e.g., links) that you click. We may use cookies, pixel tags, web beacons, clear GIF’s or other similar tools on our site or in our email messages to assist us in collecting and analyzing such information. We use this information to provide better, more relevant content on our site, to measure the effectiveness of advertisements, to identify and fix problems, and to improve your overall experience on our site. We may also engage one or more third party service providers to provide online advertisements on our behalf. They may use a pixel tag or other similar technology to collect information about your visits to sites, and they may use that information to send you targeted advertisements. If you do not want information collected through the use of these technologies, there is a simple procedure in most browsers that allows you to automatically decline many of these technologies, or to be given the choice of declining or accepting them. In addition, if you reside in a jurisdiction that requires us to obtain your consent to use cookies on our sites then you will have an opportunity to manage your cookie preferences on the sites; except that certain cookies are required to enable core site functionality and you cannot choose to disable those cookies.
When you sync a supported device through the App, data recorded on your device about your activity is transferred from your device to our servers. Each time a sync occurs, we log data about the transmission, such as the Internet Protocol (IP) address used when syncing, the sync time and date, crash/diagnostic logs, geographic location of the device, information about your device, information about the network used to sync (e.g., Wi-Fi or cellular) and device battery level. We use this information to help identify and resolve syncing issues.
We track and collect data from users about their usage of Protern.io mobile apps. The types of analytical information that are collected include the date and time the device accesses our servers, software version, the geographic location of the device, language, what information and files have been downloaded to the device, user behavior (e.g. what features used, frequency of use), device state information, device model, hardware and operating system information, and information relating to how the device functions. Protern.io uses this data to improve the quality and functionality of Protern.io’s products and apps; to develop and market products and features that best serve you and other users; and to help identify and fix usability problems as quickly as possible.
Here are examples of third-party providers of analytics and similar services we currently use:
Analytics Services
- Google: Google Analytics is used to track site statistics and user demographics, interests and behavior on websites. Firebase, another Google service, is used on some of our mobile apps to track the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns and advertisements. We also use Google Search Console to help understand how our website visitors find our website and to improve our search engine optimization. Links, Third Party Apps, and Third Parties’ Privacy Practices
Our websites, apps and products may contain links to other sites that are not operated by Protern.io, and our websites or your product may contain apps that you can download from third parties. These linked sites and apps are not under our control and we are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of any linked sites and apps. If you use any third-party sites or apps, any Personal Information collected by the third party’s site or app will be controlled by the privacy policy of that third party. We recommend that you carefully review the privacy statements of any third parties to which you provide Personal Information.
6.0 – Security and location of your personal information
Protern.io takes reasonable security measures to help protect against loss, misuse, unauthorized access and unauthorized disclosure or alteration of the Personal Information under its control. We may store your personal information in servers located in Canada or the USA, and not in your local jurisdiction. In respect of Canada, there is an adequacy decision in place from the European Commission relating to the safeguards for personal data. The data that we collect from you may also be transferred to, and stored at, United States of America outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”) for which there is an adequacy decision relating to the safeguards for personal data from the European Commission.
7.0 – Your Choices regarding Marketing Correspondence
We do not share Personal Information with third parties for the third parties’ marketing purposes.

8.0 – Policy with Respect to Children
Our websites and apps are not directed to individuals under the age of 16, and we request that individuals under 16 not the Protern.io website or our apps. If we learn that we have collected the Personal Information from a child under 16, we will take steps to delete the information as soon as possible. If you are aware of a user under the age of 16 using a Protern.io website or app, please contact us at info@protern.io.
9.0 – Privacy Statement Updates
We may change this Privacy Statement from time to time as we add new products and apps, as we improve our current offerings, and as technologies and laws change. You can determine when this Privacy Statement was last revised by referring to the “LAST UPDATED” legend at the top of this page. Any changes will become effective upon our posting of the revised Privacy Statement on our affected websites. We will provide notice to you if these changes are material and, where required by applicable law, we will obtain your consent. This notice will be provided by email or by posting notice of the changes on our affected websites or products/apps, consistent with applicable laws.
10.0 – Storage and Retention of Personal Information
We will retain your Personal Information for the period necessary to fulfill the purposes for which your Personal Information has been collected as outlined in this Privacy Statement unless a longer retention period is required by law.
11.0 – How You Can Review, Correct, Update and Delete Your Personal Information
Protern.io takes reasonable steps to help ensure that the Personal Information we collect from you is accurate, complete and current. You may request access to your Personal Information and request that erroneous or inaccurate Personal Information be updated. You may also request that your Personal Information and Protern.io account be deleted. Protern.io will respond promptly to your requests in accordance with applicable law. For your protection, we may only implement requests with respect to the Personal Information associated with the particular email address that you use to send us your request, and we may need to verify your identity before implementing your request. We may decline to process requests that jeopardize the privacy of others, are extremely impractical, or would cause us to take any action that is not permissible under applicable laws. Additionally, as permitted by applicable laws, we may need to retain certain Personal Information for a longer period of time for record-keeping purposes, such as retaining records relating to your purchases for warranty or accounting purposes.

12.0 – Your data rights – GDPR
If you are a resident of the EU, You also have the following rights in respect of your Personal Information under GDPR:
- The right to access the Personal Information we hold about you.
- The right to require us to rectify any inaccurate Personal Information about you without undue delay.
- The right to have us erase any Personal Information we hold about you in circumstances such as where it is no longer necessary for us to hold the Personal Information or, in some circumstances, if you have withdrawn your consent to the processing.
- The right to object to us processing Personal Information about you such as processing for profiling or direct marketing.
- The right to ask us to provide your Personal Information to you in a portable format or, where technically feasible, for us to port that Personal Information to another provider provided it does not result in a disclosure of Personal Information relating to other people.
- The right to request a restriction of the processing of your Personal Information.
- The right to address a challenge concerning the personal information handling policies and practices by us.
Where our processing of your Personal Information is based on your consent to that processing, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time but any processing that we have carried out before you withdrew your consent remains lawful. You may exercise any of the above rights by contacting info@protern.io. Where we are acting as the Data Processor (such as for a Team), Users should contact the Data Controller, i.e. the entity with which User has a relationship, to exercise these rights.
If you are a resident of the European Union, you may also lodge a complaint with your local privacy commissioner or other Supervisory Authority with respect to our processing of your Personal Information. The local Supervisory Authority in each European country can be found here.
