How the Protern Live Sensor works
An athlete crosses the finish. Before they stop or reach the lift line, the run is on your phone.
Timing splits, speed, acceleration, line. About a second after the finish.
This is the Protern Live Sensor. It sends each run to your phone while the athlete is on course. Video gets overlays the moment it's uploaded, so an athlete can watch their run on the lift ride up.
The rest of Protern works the way it always has. This is added on top.
Richer feedback, now on the lift ride up
Protern has always shown you more than a timing system can. Splits at every terrain and rhythm change, not just a finish and one intermediate. A run analysis function that can zoom into a ten-metre section on the steep, without needing a split set there. Speed and acceleration through every turn.
A timing system gives you splits where it has eyes. Protern gives you splits wherever they make sense, and section-level analysis on top.
What's new is when this arrives. With the Live Sensor, all of it is on your phone before the athlete reaches the lift line. Splits, speed, acceleration, section-level detail, line. While the run is still fresh in their legs and mind.
No gates to set up. No wires. No extra batteries. The sensor the athlete is already wearing does the timing.

A training day
The end-of-day chase is gone.
No more collecting sensors from athletes. No more reminding them to sync before they head home. The athlete charges the sensor overnight. Nothing to hand over. Nothing to sync.
During training, for every run:
- The run time is on your phone in about a second
- Splits, speed, acceleration, and line are there with it
- Video and overlays are ready by the time the athlete is back at the lift
Connects on its own
No SIM card. No roaming fees. No settings to change. Turn the sensor on and it works, in over 80 countries.
The sensor uses a mobile connection built for sending small amounts of data. It does not carry phone calls or video. Because it sends very little, it needs less signal than a phone. On the hill, the sensor will often keep working where your phone loses service.
Chile is the one exception. Mobile service there launches in 2027. Teams training at Portillo, Valle Nevado, or La Parva before then sync the sensor over Bluetooth or USB, the same way offline use works.
What hasn't moved
Everything you already use in Protern keeps working the way it always has:
- Comparing runs
- Overlays on video
- Multi-angle review
- Uploading by Bluetooth or USB when offline
Connectivity is optional. A Live Sensor with no connectivity plan works the same as the current Protern Sensor.
The sensor
Size. About the same size as a granola bar, and about as thick as a deck of cards. It sits flat in the new Protern Bib and does not catch on gates or jackets.
Weight. 76 grams.
Battery. A full training day on one charge. Over 10 hours with mobile on. Up to 20 hours offline.
Storage. Over 280 hours of recording on the sensor itself. A full season of offline data fits before anything needs uploading.
Accuracy. Dual-band GPS. Increased line accuracy over the previous sensor. Timing accuracy between 0.02 and 0.03 seconds. Speed accuracy 0.18 km/h. The same 10-times-per-second data rate as the current sensor.
For the full spec list, see the Protern Live Sensor page.

The new bib
The Live Sensor uses a new Protern Bib. The shape is different, so the old bib does not fit the new sensor, and the new bib does not fit the old sensor.
Every Live Sensor ships with a new bib. You do not need to order one separately.
Your existing Protern Bibs still work with your current sensors. Teams can use both side by side, and add new bibs only for the sensors they upgrade.
Replacement bibs in all sizes are available for athletes who outgrow or lose one.
Connectivity plans
Connectivity plans line up with your Protern Pass:
- Season+ Live to match a Season+ Pass.
- Season Live to match a Season Pass.
- Monthly Live if you want the flexibility of one month at a time.
Each of these has a + version with 50% more data, for athletes or teams that train more often.
Team plans. If your team buys connectivity together, the data is shared across all connected sensors. No per-athlete management.
If a plan runs over. The sensor keeps working. Any overage is settled in your Protern account alongside your Passes and sensors. Nothing to manage in the moment.
No plan. The sensor still records everything. You upload by Bluetooth or USB when you are ready, the same way the current sensor works.
For plan details and current pricing, see the Live connectivity page.
